 y and the slave trade\, whilst also addressing modern-day forms of servitu
 de and various manifestations of racism. Slavery led to the deportation of
  around 12.5 million Africans to the Americas. This exhibition highlights 
 this reality\, its violence and circumstances\, but also the tenacious str
 uggle of the victims and of those who opposed it. Although formally abolis
 hed in Portugal 157 years ago\, the truth is that slavery\, the various fo
 rms of trafficking associated with it and racism remain issues of the utmo

  “Empire of Fear”\; Ana Calçada\, who holds a degree in Social Policy
  and a Master’s in Education and Society\, curator of the exhibition “
 Empire of Fear” and numerous others\; Ana Cristina Pereira (AKA Kitty Fu
 rtado)\, who holds a PhD in Cultural Studies and is a researcher at CECS (
 UMinho)\, where she is developing the project “The Black Gaze: Black Cin
 ema in Portugal”. She works as an independent curator of (post-)colonial
  and Black cinema screenings\, organising public debates on Memory\, Racis
 m and Reparations.\nIn this discussion\, the speakers will address the his
 torical and contemporary significance of slavery\, the trafficking network
 s that sustained it\, and the many forms of racism today\, inviting the au
 dience to engage in a critical examination of the past and the present.
