- What are cookies?
Cookies – or connection indicators – are small files in text format placed on the equipment of a given user (whether computers or mobile devices) through an internet browser whenever a website is visited, meant to store, retrieve or update information.
The Porto Metropolitan Area – AMP –uses cookies on iPorto, Agenda Metropolitana da Cultura’s (iPorto, Metropolitan Culture Calendar) website to improve the information provided and allow a faster and more efficient navigation.
The AMP has no control over the creation of cookies used by content providers that can occasionally be inserted or shared on the iPorto – Agenda Metropolitana da Cultura’s website, namely social media content, such as Facebook. Those sites may create cookies when users access publications with such third-party contents.
- Kinds of cookies according to their purpose:
a) Technical/necessary cookies: they allow the user to browse through a web page, platform or application and use their different options or services.
b) Preference or customization cookies: they allow the user to access the service with some general characteristics predefined according to several criteria, such as language, the type of browser through which they access the service, the number of results of a particular search requested by the user, etc.
c) Analysis or measurement cookies: they allow the analysis and tracking of website users’ behaviour, including the quantification of the impact of ads.
d) Behavioural advertising cookies: they store users’ behaviour information obtained through continuous observation of their browsing habits, which allows the development of a specific profile to show advertising accordingly.
e) Security cookies: used to authenticate users and prevent fraudulent use of login credentials and protect data from unauthorised persons. For example, it allows users to block many types of attacks, such as attempts to steal the content of forms filled in by the users on a particular web page.
- External web services
The AMP may use external web services to show users certain content within the iPorto – Agenda Metropolitana da Cultura’s website, for example, to display images or videos and to conduct surveys. The AMP cannot prevent external sites or domains from collecting information about the use made of this embedded content.
- How to block the use of cookies
You can block the creation of cookies through your browser settings. However, if you block all cookies, you may be prevented from accessing some features of the site.
Normally, all changes to the web browser level regarding how cookies are used and/or accepted can be made in the “Options” or “Browser Preferences” section.
