António Carneiro Atelier
Tue-Sun 10:00-17:30
It was built in the 1920s as the atelier of artists António Carneiro (1872-1930) and his son Carlos Carneiro (1900-1971), key figures in Portuguese art, particularly in the Symbolist and Modernist contexts, respectively. António Carneiro’s other son, the composer Cláudio Carneyro (1895-1963), also lived here. The collection comprises around three hundred works by the artist, including: the final study for “A Vida” (Life), a work from the transition from the 19th to the 20th century; the grand canvas “Camões lendo os Lusíadas aos frades de São Domingos” (Camões reading “The Lusíadas” to the friars of São Domingos) and self-portraits, among many other works.

More info
Closed to the public for a number of years, it is currently the subject of an architectural renovation project by architect Camilo Rebelo, with the aim of restoring the original design and use of the project built in the 1920s. This project emphasises, on the one hand, the two painting studios as central spaces, and, on the other, the provision of programmatic and technical features allowing the space to be opened to the public again (Opening foreseen for March 2024).
