The Castle of Santa Maria da Feira is an emblematic work of Portuguese military architecture, dating back to the 10th century, which reflects the diversity of means of defence used throughout the medieval period as well as the great defensive innovations in later times.
Its current architectural structure is the product of a long evolutionary process, marked by successive transformations and adaptations: first as a military fortification, then as the manor residence of the Counts of Feira and finally as a National Monument, classified since 1910.
