Housed in a 1958 modernist building designed by José Carlos Loureiro, the Marta Ortigão Sampaio House was donated to the Porto City Council in 1978 and opened to the public in 1996.
Marta Ortigão Sampaio (1897-1978), daughter of Estela de Sousa and Vasco Ortigão Sampaio, nephew of Ramalho Ortigão and a famous collector and patron from Porto, was the maternal niece of painters Aurélia de Sousa and Sofia de Sousa and was born into a privileged environment, living with artistic practice from an early age.
