The Arouca Geopark, the second Portuguese geopark, was created in April 2009. It covers 328 km2, corresponding to the administrative region of the Arouca municipality. It is included in the Porto and Northern Portugal’s tourism region, 1 hour-drive away from Porto and Aveiro. Five thousand years ago, Portela da Anta was a collective grave for the shepherds’ community from the Freita Mountains. This megalithic monument is the most accessible one in the Arouca Geopark.
