Birthing Stones was the name attributed by the inhabitants of the Castanheira village, located in the heart of the Freita mountain, to a small granitic outcrop with dark nodules that come apart from it, thus the allusion to the “stone that gives birth to stones”. The House of Birthing Stones – Interpretation Centre follows the recovery of an old empty house located by the main outcrop of the famous Birthing Stones and seeks to contribute to the conservation, understanding and appreciation of this one-of-a-kind relevant geological heritage, as far as we know.
