Safira – Memories of a Revolution

The exhibition is based on the documentary work of the photojournalist Mário Marnoto, from Ílhavo, Portugal, and the Swedish journalist Jan Norming, who lived for weeks at the Safira Cooperative in Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal, in 1979. The result of this experience was an extensive photographic and journalistic record that bears witness to the spirit of cooperation, the challenges of rural life and the impact of the tragedy of 27 September 1979, when two workers were killed by soldiers from the Portuguese National Guard (GNR). The images presented are now recognised as fundamental testimonies to a remarkable period in contemporary Portuguese
