This small, ancient fort, built in the 1400s during the reign of João I of Portugal, has a quadrangular layout with four bastions at the corners: two facing the sea (the Conceição and São Francisco de Bórgia bastions) and two facing inland (the São José and São Filipe e Diogo bastions). From the flanks of the former, two 33-metre-long sections of wall extend, joining at a salient angle towards the sea and thus forming a battery 7 metres wide and over 60 metres long. In 1743, a chapel was built on the embankment of the fortification, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Our Lady of the Conception), called the “Royal Chapel”.
