The justification for Camilo Castelo Branco's stay in Póvoa was the medical recommendations for bathing in the sea, a prescription for the ailments that afflicted and depressed him, but the gambling and entertainment of the crowded and luxurious cafés were a more powerful attraction for his restless spirit. The exhibition takes us back to the atmosphere of Póvoa at the end of the 19th century, when the town's projection was made as much by its fishing activity as by the tourist movement during the bathing season.
