In 1977, theatre audiences heard for the very first time the astonishing opening line of Heiner Müller’s Hamletmachine: ‘I was Hamlet. I stood at the coast and spoke with the surf BLABLA, behind me the ruins of Europe.’ Nearly half a century later, how should we approach the complex work of the German poet and playwright?
