Ira! is one of Brazil’s most iconic rock bands, formed in 1981 in São Paulo by Nasi and Scandurra. The group emerged against the backdrop of the Brazilian rock scene of the 1980s, when the country was emerging from the military dictatorship and experiencing a period of intense cultural and political ferment. The name was inspired both by the emotion conveyed by the word — which means anger or indignation — and by the Irish revolutionary group the IRA (Irish Republican Army), reflecting the band’s rebellious spirit.
