“The scene depicts a particular mind, that of Fernando Pessoa.” Thus began the synopsis of the play that premiered at the São João Theatre on 7 December 2007. It continued: “Given the privilege of being present, we hear and see a succession of voices and characters.” The voices are those of the bookkeeper Bernardo Soares, the sensationalist Álvaro de Campos, and the bucolic master Alberto Caeiro, but also those of the female heteronym Maria José and Ofélia Queirós, the protagonist of the poet’s only known romantic involvement.
