What They Saw, What We See
Women were present at one of the most important technological revolutions of the 19th century - the invention of photography. (...) This exhibition is the result of a research project and presents, for the first time, the work of three prominent Portuguese amateur photographers, highlighting their relevance. Margarida Relvas and Mariana Relvas, respectively the daughter and second wife of renowned photographer Carlos Relvas, and Maria da Conceição de Lemos de Magalhães, who in this period developed an exceptional photographic oeuvre, revealing the shift from a romantic aesthetic to international photographic Pictorialism.
