The parish of São Martinho de Covelas dates back to ancient times, having already been mentioned in the Inquiries of D. Afonso III, dating from the year 1258. The location of the church building from that period is unknown; it would most likely have stood on the same site as, or in the vicinity of, the present one. The Parish Records of 1758 state that the church contained a high altar with the Blessed Sacrament, Saint Martin and Saint Joseph, and two side altars, one dedicated to Saint Sebastian and the other to Our Lady of the Snows.
