Bach did not specify the instrumentation for his Art of Fugue, that brilliant testament which brings to a climax centuries of music and the composer’s own creative life. Yet he could not have imagined the deconstruction to which it would be subjected at the hands of his compatriot Johannes Schöllhorn, two and a half centuries later.
