April Women is an exhibition that highlights the role of some women who opposed the so called Estado Novo political regime (1933-1974) in Portugal, and who were persecuted, imprisoned, tortured and driven into exile as a result. The 25 women whose portraits are part of the exhibition were some of the female figures who stood out in their opposition to the regime in force, and through their resistance made a decisive contribution to the end of the Salazar regime and the establishment of democracy in Portugal, with the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974.
