This small, ancient fort is thought to have been built around the 1400s, during the reign of João I of Portugal. The fortification has a quadrangular layout with four bastions at its corners: two facing the sea (the Bastions of Conceição and São Francisco de Bórgia), and two facing inland (the Bastions of São José and São Filipe e Diogo). Running from the flanks of the former are two sections of wall, each 33 metres long, which join at a projecting angle towards the sea, thus forming a battery 7 metres wide and over 60 metres long. On the rampart of the fortification, stands a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Our Lady of the Conception), known as the “Royal Chapel”, built in 1743.
